Besides this, common people of the surveyed localities who have used this plant species had
been interviewed. The information regarding the economic value of the plant species was also
gathered from local inhabitants. All the gathered information, in particular the part(s) used,
method of preparation, method of use and dosage was recorded in detail (Table 1 and Figure
5). It has been recorded that the plant species is used to treat 19 different types of diseases.
The maximum number of diseases (10) is treated by fruit kernels followed by leaves (5). To
bring element of accuracy, the information obtained from one locality was cross checked with
that of others. This results in the evidence that the local peoples share the traditional
information on regular basis. The study system is a tree up to 25 m in height, leaves
compound bearing 5-9 leaflets, Flower contains 6-8 cm male baggy catkins inflorescence and
terminal positioned clusters of 3-6 female flowers, fruit drupe with a fleshy pericarp and a
bony endocarp that encloses the 2 edible cotyledons of kernels.
Vernacular names
It is known by different names throughout the world and it is termed Persian walnut in
English, kroth in Dogri, akrooth in Hindi, Achurr or Donne in Kashmiri regional language.
Area of Cultivations
Walnut is considered as one of most important among dry fruits, is the known as largest
walnut producing region in India. In J&K UT Kashmir valley and Chenab valley of Jammu
division are the main walnut producing and cultivation regions in the whole Union Territory
(Ahmad et al., 2018; Manning, 1978). The higher altitude and colder regions about 1500m
favors the cultivation of walnut trees.

2014).
