ABSTRACT
Introduction: This review aims to study the ethnomedicinal, phytochemical and
pharmacological uses of Juglans regia Linn. Methods: The collection of literature survey has
been done from different online sources like Science direct, Scopus, ResearchGate, Google
Scholar, PubMed, etc. the literature has been selected on the basis of set inclusion and
exclusion criteria. Also, an extensive ethnomedicinal survey has been conducted based on
semi-structured interviews, open end interviews and questionnarie to document the traditional
knowledge that had been transferred from their previous generations to them and uses of
walnut among the local peoples of the Ramban area, J&K. Result: Among the 650 research
articles 195 has been selected and 455 has been discarded based on fulfilling the inclusion
and exclusion criteria. On surveying the local peoples of Chenab area which is one of major
walnut producing area of J&K, it has been resulted that the walnut is used to treat 19 different
types of diseases. The maximum number of diseases (10) is treated by fruit followed by
leaves (5). Almost every plant part is being used for human purpose. Conclusion: This paper
contains a significant knowledge and traditional information on ethnomedicinal uses,
phytochemistry, habitat, morphology, taxonomy and pharmacological uses.

INTRODUCTION
Walnut (Juglans regia L.) belongs to family juglandaceae is the most extensive and
economical tree in the world. Since, from the ancient time walnut is used to treat various
diseases and disorders. The walnut tree possesses wide range of medicinal properties in its
almost every plant parts like bark, kernel, fruit, leaves, green husk, flower. There is present
phytochemical and phytoconstituents such as alkaloids, flavonoids and polyphenolic
compounds in these plant parts which exhibits the medicinal values. Oil extracted from the
fruits is used widely in Ayurveda and other medicine system. Herbal medicine is getting
