               ABSTRACT

Phytoplanktons are photosynthetic organisms which found suspended in freshwater & marine
ecosystem. One fresh water lentic body of Hooghly district has been selected for this

investigation. Here total 22 phytoplankton taxa have been recorded. Among this members of
cyanophyceae dominate mostly followed by chlorophyceae & bacillariophyceae. Various

diversity indices indicate the phytoplankton diversity characterization. Shannon diversity

value reveals maximum diversity for post-monsoon season & lowest in pre-monsoon season.
Rank abundance analysis indicates lowest evenness pattern for pre-monsoon season.

Phytoplankton composition and their variability can depict the changes speculating the
ecological modification for the particular ecosystem. The species composition pattern,

Shannon diversity analysis indicates moderate to slight pollution status and needs an in depth
restoration to maintain the ecological equilibrium.

Key words: Phytoplankton, diversity, seasonal fluctuation

               INTRODUCTION
The biological layout of a water body is multidimensional. The various life forms of a

particular water body include a wide variety of organisms like bacteria, algae, fungi,
macrophytes, zooplankton, insects, mollusks, fishes etc. Various qualitative characters of a

water body can be described by its sustaining life forms and therefore provide a source for

studying the qualitative status of the water body. Phytoplankton establishes as a cardinal
organism of aquatic environment & act as most common primary producer in the aquatic

system. The phytoplankton composition, diversity pattern varies depending on the various
surrounding circumstances. They are mostly influenced by the anthropogenic effects under

concern (Pore et al., 2020; Das et al. 2018; Omar et al. 2016 ; Pomati et al., 2017 ; Ghosh

et al., 2012; Almeida & Moura, 2012 Barinova et al., 2014).
