Shimla Hills was surveyed at places like Summer Hills,Shogi,Tara Devi,Fagu and
Charabra.Only terrestrial orchids were found growing during monsoon season(June-
September) inhabiting north facing slopes. These are found growing on humus rich soils
grassy slopes mostly semi shaded places.
OBSERVATIONS AND RESULTS
Some of the medicinal orchids found in various regions are enlisted(Figs.A-M).A total of 17
orchid species under 10 genera belonging to sub-families Orchidoideae and Epidendroideae
have been collected from Shimla hills and adjoining areas. All Orchids in the present study
are of terrestrial habit found growing in elevation range of approximately 1900-2620m above
the sea level during monsoon period of July-September.The brief notes on distribution, habitat
ecology, biological status and indigenous uses of the presently studied orchid species were
prepared (Table1).
