ABSTRACT
Algae are recognised as the primitive group of organisms in plant kingdom due to
disparities in their organization of construction ranging from unicellular to multicellular form.
They are ubiquitous in distribution and dwell at all type of moist habitats. They are
significant component of an aquatic and role as the biological indicators to outline the
eminence of water. Floristic study on algae is noteworthy phases to reflects the seasonal
variation, ecological functions and stability of aquatic ecosystem. The current status of the
floristic diversity of freshwater algae in central parts of Karnataka, particularly at
Shivamogga district is infrequent and insufficient. Hence forth, this present endeavour is
attempted to provide the detailed account on the existence of freshwater algae from Keladi
Pond, Shivamogga district, Karnataka. Periodical field survey was conducted to different
sites of Keladi hirekere pond during September 2018 to January 2020. The current
comprehensive survey revealed the presence of 65 taxa belong to 43 genera of 22 families
under 4 classes (Chlorophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Bacillariophyceae and Euglenophyceae).
Among them, Chlorophyceae is the predominant class with 42 taxa (65%), followed by
Cyanophyceae with 10 taxa (15%), Bacillariophyceae with 8 taxa (12%) and class
Euglenophyceae is the least group with 5 taxa (8%). Desmidiaceae of Chlorophyceae is the
overriding family with 22 taxa with 8 genera, it trails Chroococcaceae of Cyanophyceae with
5 taxa under 4 genera and Naviculaceae is the recessive family with 2 genera under
Bacillariophyceae.
