It is also possible that the reduction in carbohydrate content could be due to impaired
photosynthetic activity. This view can be sustained by decreased photosynthetic pigments as
observed in the present investigation. The reduction in the sugar level observed in the present
studies may be due to one of the above factors.
Photosynthetic rate may also probably be more directly responsible for starch
synthesis. It was also observed that the photosynthetic rate decreased due to nematode
infection. The reduced chlorophyll was observed infected plant. In the present study, it was
discernible that the reduction in total starch content might be due to reduced photosynthetic
pigments due to nematode infection. This in turn resulted in reduced starch synthesis in the
diseased plant.
A general reduction in the activities on the β-amylase, Alcohol dehydrogenase, and
Glucose dehydrogenase enzymes were observed in the infected untreated plants. The reduced
activities exhibited by the enzymes mighty are due to the reduced availability of the
substrates. With the reduction in the sugar in the infected plant, reduced activities in the root
and shoot were observed for dehydrogenase of alcohol and glucose, since the enzyme
involved in carbohydrate metabolism (Kannan, 1984).
