As concerned with number of blue-green algal species, the soils from rainfed (non-irrigated)
areas found correlated with a paucity of blue-green algal growth. These results coincide with
the soils from Maharashtra. As regards the relative abundance of blue-green algal species, it
could be concluded that, the preponderance of species observed in the study area was due to
the alkalinity and or salinity of the soil or to some being under cultivation with canal
irrigation. The various factors such as, fertility status of soil, waterlogged conditions in the
arable lands are some of the reasons for the growth of blue-green algae in the study area.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
The author expresses deep sense of gratitude to Dr. S.D. Pingle for his valuable guidance and
encouragement during the entire research investigation.
